Langtang Ganja-la Pass Trek

The Langtang Ganja-La pass trek is one of the finest trekking adventures in the Langtang region. More than trekking this ganja la trek in the Himalayas allows us to explore the fascinating area of Langtang Valley and to pass Ganja La pass which is one of the challenging Himalayan passes. The fantastic trip includes exploring the vibrant villages of Tamang and Hyalmo tribes, these people typically live in the Himalayan belts and follow the Buddhist religion. 

Likewise, the trek to Langtang also offers to visit some of the oldest and most exciting Buddhist monasteries in the high Himalayas. Among them, Kyanjin Gompa is the major pick. This wonderful trekking route includes collecting the mesmerizing views of Ghengu Liru (Langtang II 6,571m / 21,560ft), Langtang Lirung (7,425m / 23,765ft) Kimshun (6,745m / 22,137ft) and Shalbachum(6,918m / 22, 699ft) to the south, the Chimsedang Lekh a ridge of peaks includes Naya-Kanga 5,846m or Ganjala peak with Gangchempo and more. 

Whereas, crossing the high Ganja La pass at 5122 meters adds fun and excitement to the trip. As the trek goes around the famous Langtang National Park, they encounter the endangered species red panda. 

Like other trekking in Langtang, Langtang Valley and Ganja La Pass is also a seasonal trek. The best months to trek are the months of spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Trekking in Nepal will be in the months of winter (December to February) is doable. But trekking in monsoon (June to August) is not recommended due to the heavy rainfall. In monsoon season you can do Tamang Heritage Trek or Langtang Valley Trek. 

Ganjala Pass Trek Route

Langtang Ganjala Pass Trek is an adventure trekking route located in the Langtang region of Nepal. This trek takes you through the picturesque Langtang Valley, offering stunning views of snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and diverse landscapes. The highlight of the trek is crossing the Ganjala pass which stands at an elevation of approximately 5,122 meters. 16,800 feet above sea level. The trek typically starts from Syabrubesi and follows the Langtang River upstream. Passing through dense forests charming villages and scenic meadows as you ascend, you will have the opportunity to explore the unique culture of the Tamang people, who inhabit the Langtang region.

The route to Ganjala Pass itself is a challenging section of the trek, requiring a good level of physical fitness and acclimatization. The pass offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks including Langtang Lirung and Ganesh Himal. After crossing the pass, the descent takes you to the Helambu region known for its terraced fields and traditional villages.

This trek starts from Dhunche which goes up to Langtang valley and another path leading up to Gosainkunda Pass.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu( 1,350 m / 4,430 ft) and transfer to Hotel

Upon your arrival at Kathmandu International Airport, you will be welcomed by our representative. You will be then transferred to the hotel. Later, you can take a good rest or walk around the local market in your free time. 

Day 2 : Drive to Syabrubesi (1,470 m/4822ft.) via Trisuli (6/7 hours’ drive).

The starting day of the wonderful Langtang Valley trek. Today you will be driving to Syabrubesi via Trishuli Bazar and Dhunche. The drive is through the green hills and local villages via the Trishuli river bank. Whereas, occasional mountain views are expected on clear days. You will be spending your night at a local hotel in Syabrubesi.

Day 3 : Trek to Lama Hotel (2,,360m/77,040 ft./ 5/6 hours trek).

The trek officially starts today. The route from Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel is a gradual climb through the terraced farm fields and the villages. Trekking through the rhododendron and oaks forest is an exciting walk. At the Lama Hotel, you will be spending your night at a local teahouse.

Day 4 : Trek to Langtang village (3,500m/11,480 ft./ 5/6 hours trek).

Take a good breakfast in the hotel before the trek resumes. The route to Langtang village from Lama Hotel is an easy walk. Passing Ghoretabela, then to the pine and rhododendron forest, you will be slowly getting towards the higher elevation. Upon arriving at Langtang village, you can explore the beautiful village. You will be spending your night at a local lodge.

Day 5 : Trek to Kyanjin Gompa (3,749 m/12229ft./ 4/5 hours trek).

The route to Kyanjin Gompa from Langtang village is a gradual uphill. The route has a wonderfully crafted “Mani Prayer Wall” and remember to walk clockwise to respect the Buddhist religion. Furthermore, getting closer to Kyanjin Gompa, the greater views of the mountains open up.

Kyanjin Gompa is a mountain viewpoint with an amazing view of Langtang Lirung and other mountains. You can also explore the Buddhist monastery here.  You will be spending your night at a lodge. 

Day 6 : Side hike to Tserko Ri (4,900m./16,072 ft./ 2/3 hours hike) and exploration.

The day is dedicated to exploring around and a side hiking trip to Tserko Ri. Tserko Ri – the mountain viewpoint offers greater views of mountains including Langtang Himal, Ganesh Himal (7,405 m), Langtang Lirung (7,234 m),  Ghengu Liru (Langtang II  6,571m), Kimshun (6,745 m) and Shalbachum(6,918m), Chimsedang, Naya-Kanga or Ganja Chuli (5,846m), Gangchempo, Tilman's beautiful Fluted Peak, Jugal Himal and ending to eastern horizon at Dorje Lakpa (6,980m). After collecting the good views of the mountains, you will be retracing back to Kyanjin Gompa for the night. 

Day 7 : Trek to Ganja La Phedi (4,300m /14107ft./5/6 hours trek).

After two excellent days in Kyanjin, you will be hiking to Phedi today. Taking the southeast you will be first crossing Langtang Khola. From there, take the uphill route to get to Phedi. As you are staying overnight at a tented camp, you will need to find a free space for camping. Your trekking team will be setting the camp for the night where you can give a hand with the camp set up too. You will be staying overnight at a tented camp.

Day 8 : Cross Ganja La pass (5,122 m/16804ft.)trek to Keldang (4,250m/13943ft./7/8 hours trek).

One of the best days of this trip, you will be crossing the Ganja la pass this day. Starting early morning you will be climbing to the pass where the guide has fixed the ropes for the necessary sections. The climb to the pass is rock and ice to the top. Upon reaching the top you can enjoy the excellent views of Langtang and Shisapangma Mountain and more. After the successful pass, you will then descend to Keldang for the night. You will be staying overnight at a tented camp. 

Day 9 : Trek to Dukpu (4,080 m/13385ft./5/6 hours trek).

An easy trekking day. As always you will be starting the day after breakfast. The route today passes a few summer pastures on the downhill trail to reach Dukpu. On the final day of the camping, your guide will be setting the camp for the night at Dukpu. You will be staying overnight at a tented camp.

Day 10 : Trek to Tarkegyang (2,590 m/8497ft./4/5 hours trek).

Back from the wilderness, today onwards you will be trekking through the farmlands and the small settlement. The walk starts with a small cross and downhill with excellent views of the Langtang and Jugal Himal range which includes the Mt Everest range in the far east. With the excellent views of the mountains, the walk continues through the rhododendron forest to reach t Tarkegyang. It is a wonderful village where the Hyalmo people live. Hyalmo tribes have interesting cultures and traditions that look similar to the Sherpa and Tamang religions. Tarkegyang is one of the exciting villages in Helambu with an old Buddhist monastery. You can go around the village and explore it. You will be staying overnight at a local lodge. 

Day 11 : Drive to Kathmandu via Melamche Bazaar (6/7hours’ drive).

The last day of the trek. You will be driving back to Kathmandu via Melamchi Bazar. Upon arriving in Kathmandu, you can take a good rest. In the evening, you can do some last-minute shopping near the hotel. 

Day 12 : Final departure .

After an amazing week in Nepal, you will be transferred to Kathmandu airport to catch your return flight home. Our representative will be helping you to transfer to the airport, with the hope of seeing you again in Nepal.  “FERI BHETAULA”
