Overview

Upper Dolpo Trek

Upper Dolpo Trek is a trek on the remote and isolated part of the Far Western Himalayan area of Nepal. The scenic yet least explored Upper Dolpo Trekking route of Nepal, this fascinating trip offers a closer sight of the ancient Bon culture. Beyond the excellent mountains of Dhaulagiri and adjoining peaks. Dolpo trek combines exploring the rural farm villages with the interesting Bon and Buddhist cultures of the Himalayas. 

The inclusion of the Crystal monastery of Shey Gompa-17th century complex with excellent views of mountains and exciting landscapes. Next SheyPhoksundo Lake makes the trip complete. Phoksundo Lake is an oligotrophic lake situated at an elevation of 3611 meters above sea level. Kang -La passes at 5350 meters above sea level and Jayanta-La passes at 5220 meters above sea level add the fun and excitement to the trek. Like with trekking in Nepal, the best time to trek is from April to October. 


Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu (1350m./4429ft).

Upon arriving at Kathmandu international airport, you will be welcomed by one of our representatives. You will be then transferred to the hotel. In your free time, you can take a good rest of you can walk around the local market. 

Day 2 : Kathmandu sightseeing and preparation.

Kathmandu valley sightseeing is dedicated to explore four of the UNESCO World Heritage listed sites of Kathmandu. Those four sites are Kathmandu Durbar Square, Pashupatinath Temple, Soyambhunath Monastery, and Boudhanath. After completing the Kathmandu valley sightseeing, you will then have the time to do the preparation for the trekking. If you do not have any gears then your guide can help you to get them in the tourist market of Thamel. 

Day 3 : Fly to Nepalgunj (45 minutes flight).

Today you will be taking a short flight to Nepalgunj to start the trek. After completing the preparation and getting all the gears needed for the trek, you will be transferred to Kathmandu international airport’s domestic terminal to catch your flight to Nepalgunj. 

Upon arriving in Nepalgunj airport, you will be transferred to the hotel in Nepalgunj for the night. You will be staying overnight at the hotel. 

Day 4 : Fly to Jhupal (2,475 m) trek to Dunai (2,140 m/4/5 hours trek).

Take the early morning breakfast, you will be then transferred to the airport to catch the flight to Jhupal. Jhupal village is a nice village. You will then start the trek to Dunai. The route is easy and combined route of flat and uphill. Upon arriving at Dunai, you can explore around the local village. You will be staying overnight at a local house. 

Day 5 : Trek to Chhepka(2,838 m/5/6 hours trek).

Passing the marketplace and then crossing the bridge over the ThuloBheri River, you will gradually walk towards Chhepaka with the greater views of Kagmara Peak. The route then heads for a downhill passing the farm villages to Dhera, a small cattle herders’ settlement. Furthermore, you will push for a short climb to Rahagaon village. It is a wonderful village of combined tribe Thaukri. 

Then make the final push of downhills through the forested area to reach Chhekpa for the night. You will be staying overnight at a local lodge.  

Day 6 : Trek to Rechivillage (2,940m/5/6 hours trek).

The walk starts with a short climb then the descend section into the forest gradually leads you to the river bank. Then you will take an ascending route leaving the forest behind. The landscapes are interesting along the way. The final section of leads via the upstream to cross the bridge to get to Rechi village for the night. You will be staying overnight at a local lodge. 

Day 7 : Trek to Ringmo village (3733m./4/5 hours trek).

After having the delicious breakfast, today you will be trekking to Ringmo village. The route includes of the uphill then the downhill sections. As the altitude gains, walking pace gets slower and you will start feeling the thin air. Upon arriving at Ringmo village, you will have enough time for the rest. You will be staying overnight at a local teahouse. 

Day 8 : Acclimatization at Ringmo village.

The day is dedicated for the acclimatization. This day you can go around and can explore the beautiful village of Ringmo.Ringmo is an interesting village of Tibetan origin culture with mud plastered chhorten and Mani (prayer) walls of Bon sect and Buddhist religion. You can get the closer insight of the local people culture, traditions and the lifestyle. You will be staying overnight at a local tea house. 

Day 9 : Trek to Phuksundo Khola(3,750 m/4/5 hours trek) via Phoksundo Lake.

Setting off the destination of Phoksundokhola, you will be starting the day after the breakfast. Along the way you will visiting the famous lake of Phoksundo. You will have ample time to spend at the lake before heading to PhoksundoKhola for the overnight. You will be staying overnight at local the camp. 

Day 10 : Trek to Campsite (4,717 m /4/5 hours trek).

The route from PhoksundoKhola diverts north on a good route to the hill slopes. After completing steep uphill, you will reach to the ridge. The top offers the greater views of green valley looking over the Kangla Pass that leads to the destination of Shey Gompa.  The campsite is a small place with nice valley views. You will be staying overnight at the camp.


Day 11 : Trek to High camp (4900m./4/5 hours trek).

The route from campsite to high camp is relatively shorter, but the higher altitude walk is relatively slower. It takes four hours at least to get high camp from the campsite. At the campsite, you can collect good views of the mountains. You will be staying overnight at the tented camp. 

Day 12 : Cross Kang-La (5,350 m) and trek to Shey Gompa (4,160 m/5/6 hours).

The route continues to a climb on stone and rocky path to crossing the challenging Kang La pass at 5350 meters above the sea level. This is actually the highest point of your adventure. The exciting pass offers the greater views of the fantastic landscapes and the snow-covered peaks. You can collect the fine views of Mount Dhaulagiri in the east. Upon passing the pass you will be then descending to reach the river bank. Then crossing the cattle herder camps via Chhorten and the Mani walls. Then the walk gradually takes you to the today’s destination of Shey monastery.  You will be staying overnight at the tented camp. 

Day 13 : Rest day at Shey Gompa the crystal monastery.

The day is dedicated for the acclimatization and the exploration of famous Shey Gompa. The isolated and remote region in the Himalayas, it is one of the most hidden places away from the modern civilization. Shey Gompa is regarded as the oldest monastery around in the region. This Gompa is also famous as Crystal Monastery. Enjoy the day exploring the famous place. You will be staying overnight at a tented camp.


Day 14 : Trek to Namgung(4,608 m) via Sela (Gela) La (5,094m/5/6 hours trek).

The journey from Shey Gompa the journey continuous heading into the canyon wall towards Sela La ridge. Sela La ridge is located at the height of 5094 meters above the sea level. The top ridge of the Sela La offers the magnificent views of landscapes and the finest views of Dhaulagiri peaks. From the ridge, you will be then taking the downhill route to reach to Namgung for the overnight.


Day 15 : Trek to Saldang (3,770 m/4/5 hours trek).

Following the dusty windswept route, you will be first taking the walk towards an uphill to get to Saldang for the night. Along the way the you can collect the greater landscapes view. Upon reaching Saldang, you can explore around the wonderful village. You will be staying overnight at a local teahouse.  

Day 16 : Trek to Khomas Gaon (4,060 m/4/5 hours trek).

Following the Nang Chu river, the walk today includes the combination of the uphill and the downhill. Along the way you will be passing several cattle herder to reach with the wonderful views of the landscapes. You will be staying overnight at a tented camp at Khomas Gaon. 

Day 17 : Trek to Mendo(3950m./5/6 hours trek).

The trek resumes after breakfast. The route for today is an easy walk with the combination of the uphill and the downhill. You will collect the views of the beautiful landscape along the way. The yak pastures into the foggy route finally take you to Mendo for the overnight. You will be overnight at a tented camp.

Day 18 : Trek to RapkaKhola (5205 meters/4/5 hours trek).

After the nice stop at Mendo, today you will be trekking towards the RapkaKhola. Following the river for some time, the route then takes swift uphill to get to RapkaKhola. Along the way, you will be encounter with yaks and mules’ route to Tibet. You can also collect the greater views of Dhaulagiri mountain this day. You will be staying overnight at a tented camp. 

Day 19 : Trek to Chharkabhot (4110m./5/6 hours trek).

After having a wonderful day at RapkaKhola, this day you will be trekking to Chharkabhot. Chharkabhot is one of the best places to for overnight as it offers the greater views of landscapes. The route for the day is mostly downhill and the easy track. You will be staying overnight at the tented camp.


Day 20 : Trek to Norbulung (4750m./5/6 hours trek).

The trek resumes after the breakfast, the route to Norbulung is a gradual uphill passing several yak pastures. Enroute, you can collect the good views of landscapes and may get chance of encountering with some wildlife. Upon reaching Norbulung, your guide will be setting the camp for the night, where you can help them and take the fine rest later. You will be staying overnight 


Day 21 : Trek to Shangla Phedi via Niwal Pass (5120m./5/6 hours trek).

One of the exciting days, you will start the day after the breakfast. The first section of the day is gradual uphill to the top of the Niwal pass ridge. From the top you can collect wonderful views of mountain and the excellent landscapes. Then after you will be descending down to Shangla Phedi for the night. You will be staying overnight at the tented camp.

Day 22 : Trek to Shangda (3940m./5/6 hours trek).

Like other days, you will be starting the day after breakfast.  The route is easy and mostly downhill. The walk passing the several yak pastures with beautiful landscapes is better. You will be staying overnight at a tented camp.

Day 23 : Trek to Dhagarjun (3840m./5/6 hours trek).

Today journey is a pleasant one through the forest passing through some small villages. It takes five to six hours to reach to Dhagarjun. Dhagarjun is a small village. You can explore around Dhagarjun in the free time. You will be staying overnight at a tented camp.

Day 24 : Trek to Jomsom (2730m./5/6 hours trek).

The final day of the trek, you will further be descending down to Jomsom for the night. Jomsom is inside the Annapurna and Mustang section where you can finally meet many tourists. The trekkers to Upper Mustang and the trekkers finishing Annapurna circuit usually meets at Jomsom. You will be staying overnight at a local teahouse in Jomsom. 

Day 25 : Fly to Pokhara (20 minutes flight) and free day.

You will be taking a scenic flight from Jomsom to Pokhara. You will then be transferred tothe hotel. In Pokhara, you can take good rest. In the evening you can walk to the Phewa lake bank to collect the best sunset view. In Pokhara, you can also find so many places to chill around. You will be spending your night at a 3-star hotel. 

Day 26 : Drive to Kathmandu. (6/7 hours’ drive) and last-minute shopping.


You will be taking a scenic drive back to Kathmandu from Pokhara. The drive is through the green hills, local markets and bazaars. In Kathmandu you can do some last-minute shopping. You will be staying overnight at a 3-star hotel. 


Day 27 : Fly back home.

After collecting wonderful memory of Upper Dolpo trek, today you will be transferred to Kathmandu international airport to catch the flight. We hope to see you again in Nepal.
